In my last blog I wrote about how I grew up with a mother that spent a lot of time in the laundry, doing the washing all manually… which obviously took a long time.

Today I want to focus on a few things that I believe makes a laundry more design and user friendly.

The number one item in any laundry is obviously a good washing machine that washes your clothes well and efficiently. But that aside, there are so many design elements you should be considering if you are building a new home or renovating your laundry.

  • A place to put your dirty washing. A designated space for a laundry basket is paramount to ensuring that the clothes don’t just end up on the floor in front of the washing machine. This can either be an open space under your bench or you can get your laundry custom designed the same as you do your kitchen, to include baskets inside the cupboard space for your dirty linen.
  • A bench for sorting and folding – having a bench to sort and fold clean  laundry that has come in off the line or out of the dryer is very important for ensuring smooth transitions and ease of a daily task. Definitely a must in any laundry, even if you have only a small space, try to think about ways to include a bench in this area.
  • A hanging space for your delicates or crease free clothes. This is often overlooked, but is a simple way of keeping those special items out of the general wash and hanging cycle. Just a small line, either a fold out one you can purchase from Bunnings and add yourself or you can include it in your design for your builder to install. Ensure that this space has plenty of airflow and drying capacity.
