Winter in Australia is almost upon us, and while the chilly winter weather is certainly refreshing, it can also be quite costly when it comes to your electricity bill. We believe that there are a few simple home styling tricks that can help to reduce your bill this winter while still staying comfortable.

1.      Add some extra warmth this winter by using accessories; plump cushions and throws are perfect. Add warm colours and textures to your styling. Earthy tones of red, orange and yellow make you feel happy and content, as do the beautiful warm natural colours like khaki and varying shades of creams and browns; warm colours are perfect for creating a cosy atmosphere. A throw blanket can be draped over the back of a sofa or chair, or you could even use it as a bedspread on cold nights. Make sure to choose a warm and snugly fabric like fleece or wool, faux or warm soft cotton; and if you’re looking for an extra layer of insulation, consider investing in a thermal blanket.

2.      Adding floor rugs to your home; placing rugs over the top of an aging carpet, or defining a space is always a great idea, and not as expensive as replacing your carpets.  Not only do rugs add extra warmth and comfort underfoot, but they can also help trap heat in your home. Be sure to choose rugs with a thick pile so that they will be most effective at keeping your home warm. One next to your bed that is soft and warm can make all the difference to your partner – you don’t want to have feet like icicles 😉

3.      Invest in some warm bedding; Another great way to keep warm during the winter is to invest in some good quality bedding. A thick quilt or duvet (some Aussies call them Donas) will help insulate your body and keep you warm at night. Make sure your sheets are also made from a warm material like flannel or cotton.

4.      Layer your clothing; One of the best ways to stay warm while also reducing your electricity bill is to layer your clothing. Start with a thin layer of material like cotton, and then add a layer of wool or fleece on top. This will help trap heat close to your body and keep you warm. Adding a jacket will give you the added insulation you might need.

5.      Energy Efficient Appliances; When possible, try to use appliances that are energy-efficient, items such as your washing machine and dishwasher. Turn off the second fridge that you use for cold drinks in summer. Not only will this help save you money on your electricity account, but it will also be better for the environment. No need to go and buy new if you don’t need new appliances at the moment, but next time you are out there looking around for a new appliance, check the energy efficiency ratings. You will be surprised how many appliances that you think are energy efficient, actually are not at all.

6.      Shower time; You would have heard this one many times, but it holds true - an easy way to save money on your electricity bill is by taking shorter showers. Try aiming for five minutes or less to help conserve water and energy. This can be hard when it’s cold! I turn off the hot at the end of the shower and finish with a nice cold blast for about 20 seconds, then I am very ready to get out of the shower!

7.      Finally, don’t forget about your windows! Another great way to reduce your electricity bill is by adjusting your blinds and curtains. Keeping your curtains and blinds open during the day will allow natural light and sunshine to come in and help warm up your home, meaning you won’t have to turn on the heating as much.
