Sellers with pools have until 30 November this year within which to comply with Queensland’s new safety laws.

What’s a Pool? It’s what you think it is – you use it to swim in! It’s also

  • A portable pool or spa with any one of the following:
    •    a depth of more than 300 mm; or
    •    a volume or more than 2000 litres; or
    •    has a filtration system

Fencing by numbers

  •          1200 mm – the min distance between finished ground level and top of the barrier
  •          100 mm – the max gap allowed between finished ground level and bottom of the barrier
  •          100mm - the max gap allowed between any vertical members at least 900 mm apart
  •          10 mm- the max gap allowed between any vertical members less than 900 mm apart
  •          900 mm – the min distance between the fence and any climbable object outside
  •          300 mm - the min distance between the fence and any climbable object inside
  •          1500 mm – the min height from finished ground level to gate latch
  •          1400 mm – the min height from the top of the highest low horizontal member  to gate latch
  •          900 mm – the min distance between gate hinges if the bottom hinge is not fitted with one of those nifty non climbable caps
  •          100 mm – the minimum opening allowance for any windows opening on to pool area

Make sure:

  •          gates open outward from pools, not inward
  •          no other doors or windows provide access to the pool
  •          a CPR sign is displayed prominently
  •          pools are registered with QBCC. Sellers can check if they’re registered here
